Description
Provair is indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB), and relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
DosageAndAdministration
- AdultsAndAdolescents: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- PediatricPatients:
- 6to14Years: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- 2to5Years: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- 6MonthsTo5Years: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily, can be administered directly in the mouth or mixed with cold water or soft food at room temperature
- SpecialPopulations:
- HepaticInsufficiency: No dosage adjustment required
- RenalInsufficiency: No dosage adjustment recommended

Interaction
Provair can be administered with other therapies routinely used in the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma without apparent increase in adverse reactions. It did not have clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs. Appropriate clinical monitoring is recommended when potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers are co-administered with Provair.
Contraindications
Montelukast is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this product.
SideEffects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, haemorrhage, irritability, malaise, muscle complaints, oedema, seizure, abnormal sensation, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, erythema nodosum, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor
PregnancyAndLactation
Montelukast crosses the placenta following oral dosing in rats and rabbits. Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother.
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- ReversalOfBronchospasm: Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- RescueMedication: Patients should have appropriate rescue medication available
- TherapyDuringAcuteExacerbations: Therapy with Provair can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- AspirinSensitivity: Provair should not be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Corticosteroids: Provair should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
OverdoseEffects
There were no adverse experiences in the majority of overdosage reports. In the event of overdose, usual supportive measures should be employed.
