Indications
- Single infestations of hookworm
- Mixed infestations of roundworm and whipworm
- Treatment of tapeworm and strongyloides
Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
- Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Depletes energy level leading to immobilization
- Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
Dosage & Administration
- 400 mg single dose for certain infections
- 400 mg daily for 3 days in strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
- Recommended dose for children of different age groups
- Specific dosage for hydatid disease (Echinococcosis)
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not normally used in neonates
- Reduction of dose for children weighing less than 10 kg
- Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation

- Rarely reversible alopecia
- Rash, fever, blood disorders
- Allergic shock if cyst leakage
