Indications
- Edema associated with congestive heart failure

Pharmacology
- Loop diuretic
- Rapid onset of action
- Short duration of action
- Equivalent diuretic potency to furosemide
- Action on ascending limb of the loop of Henle
- Inhibition of sodium and chloride reabsorption
- Possible action in the proximal tubule
- Phosphaturic action
- No noticeable action on the distal tubule
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration
- Initial dose of 1 mg in the morning
- Severe cases may require 5 mg daily
- IV Injection dose of 1-2 mg
- IV Infusion dose of 2-5 mg over 30-60 minutes
- IM Injection initial dose of 1 mg
- Dosage adjustment for elderly patients
- Paediatric use safety and effectiveness
Interaction
- Interaction with lithium
- Interaction with probenecid
- Interaction with indomethacin
- Potentiation of antihypertensive drugs' effect

Contraindications
- Avoid in severe hypokalaemia
