Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Reducing risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
Pharmacology
- Losartan acts as a potent vasoconstrictor
- Hydrochlorothiazide affects renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption
Dosage
- Usual starting dose of 50/12.5 is one tablet once daily
- Antihypertensive effect attained within three weeks after initiation of therapy
Administration
May be administered with or without food
Interaction
- No significant drug-drug interactions found with Losartan Potassium
- Thiazide diuretics may interact with alcohol, barbiturates, or narcotics
- Dosage adjustment of antidiabetic drugs may be required when interacting with Hydrochlorothiazide
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
- Contraindicated in patients with anuria or hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs
Side Effects
- Symptomatic hypotension and dizziness may occur
- Hyperkalaemia occurs occasionally
- Vertigo, gastro-intestinal disturbances, angina, palpitation, oedema, dyspnoea, headache, sleep disorders, malaise, urticaria, pruritus, rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoided in pregnancy unless essential; not recommended in breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Periodic determination of serum electrolytes recommended
- Hypokalemia may rarely develop
- Impaired renal function and symptomatic hypotension to be monitored
Use in Special Populations
- Use in patients with renal impairment and hepatic impairment
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients
Overdose Effects
- Hypotension and tachycardia likely in overdosage of Losartan Potassium
- Electrolyte depletion observed in Hydrochlorothiazide overdose
