Indications
- Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Pharmacology
- Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
- Improvement in urine flow rate
- Reduction in symptoms of BPH
- Absorption percentage (90%) following oral administration under fasting conditions
- Time to maximum concentration (Tmax) reached by four to five hours under fasting conditions
- Extensively metabolized by cytochrome P 450 enzymes in the liver
- Elimination half-life ranges from five to seven hours
- Apparent half-life is approximately 9 to 15 hours
Dosage & Administration
- 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily, to be taken after meal at night
- Dose may be increased after 2 to 4 weeks to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily
- Capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water (about 150 ml)
- Should not be crunched or chewed
Interaction
- Concurrent administration with other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
- No interactions with atenolol, enalapril or nifedipine
- Cimetidine brings about a rise and frusemide a fall in plasma levels
- Increase the elimination rate by Diclofenac and warfarin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Reduction in blood pressure can occur
- Cautioned to avoid situations where injury could result
- Examination to exclude other conditions which can cause the same symptoms
- Digital rectal examination and determination of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) before treatment and at regular intervals afterwards

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Transient postural symptoms during orthostatic provocation testing after the first dose
- Use in patients with micturition syncope is not advised
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines
- Dizziness can occur
Overdose Effects
- No reported acute overdosage cases
- Acute hypotension likely to occur after overdosage
- Cardiovascular support should be given
- Renal function monitoring and general supportive measures applied
