Indications
- Treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure
- Treatment of edema associated with hepatic and renal disease
- Treatment of edema associated with nephrotic syndrome
Pharmacology
- Loop diuretic
- Rapid onset of action
- Short duration of action
- Equivalent diuretic potency to furosemide
Dosage & Administration
- Oral dosage: 1 mg in the morning
- IV Injection: 1-2 mg, repeated if necessary
- IV Infusion: 2-5 mg over 30-60 minutes
- IM Injection: 1 mg initially, then adjusted according to response
Interaction
- Interaction with lithium
- Interaction with probenecid
- Interaction with indomethacin
- Interaction with antihypertensives
- No effect on digoxin blood levels
- No effect on warfarin metabolism
Contraindications
- Severe hypokalaemia
- Severe hyponatraemia
- Anuria
- Comatose and precomatose states associated with liver cirrhosis
- Renal failure
