Indications

Pharmacology
- 3rd generation broad-spectrum parenteral cephalosporin antibiotic
- Potent bactericidal activity
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of beta lactamases
- Long plasma elimination half-life of 6 to 9 hours
- Not metabolized in the body
- Excretion in urine and bile
- Highly protein bound (95%)
Dosage
- Adult dose: 1 to 2 gm by intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day or in equally divided doses twice a day
- Maximum adult dose: 4 gm/day
- Infants and Children dose: 50 to 75 mg/kg intravenous or intramuscular administration once a day or in equally divided doses twice a day
- Maximum pediatric dose: 2 gm/day
- Duration of therapy: 4 to 14 days or longer in complicated infections
Administration
- Preparation of Solutions for Intramuscular / Intravenous Injections
- Dissolving in 2 ml Lidocaine HCI 1% for Intramuscular Injection
- Reconstitution in Water for intravenous Injection
- Recommended administration over 2-4 minutes
- Patient tolerance test before treatment
- Potency maintenance for at least 6 hours at room temperature or 24 hours at 5°C

Contraindications
Not for patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Cutaneous reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Hematologic reactions such as eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, anemia
- Hepatic reactions like elevations of SGOT or SGPT
- CNS reactions including nervousness, confusion, sleep disturbances
- Rare occurrence of local phlebitis following intravenous administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety in human pregnancy not established, caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for anaphylactic shock
- Monitor gallbladder condition
- Regular blood picture checks during prolonged treatment
- Avoid in neonates if premature or newborn (up to 28 days of age)
