Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections
- Infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Infections of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts
- Gonorrhoea and septicaemia treatment
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Gastro-intestinal infections
- Bone and joint infection
- Eye, ear, nose and throat infections
Pharmacology
Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with broad spectrum of activity against gram negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria. Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis. Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract.
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage depends on severity of infection and age/weight/renal function of patient
- Dosage adjustments for impaired renal function and elderly patients
- Duration of treatment depends on severity of infection and clinical response
Administration
- Instructions for Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Regulation of rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
Concurrent administration of Fiprox should be avoided with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids or sucralfate. Fiprox should not be taken concurrently with milk or other dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or to other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Disturbances of the central nervous system
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain, mild photosensitivity, transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy not recommended due to arthropathy in immature animals. Administration to nursing mothers not recommended.
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Concurrent administration with magnesium/aluminium antacids to be avoided
- Fiprox should not be taken concurrently with milk or yogurt alone
Use in Special Populations
Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion
- Abdominal discomfort
- Renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
