Description
Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells with a 165 amino acid sequence identical to human urinary EPO.
Indications
- Treating anemia due to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
- Treating anemia due to Zidovudine in HIV-infected patients
- Treating anemia due to concomitant myelosuppressive chemotherapy
- Reducing allogeneic RBC transfusions in noncardiac, nonvascular surgery patients
- Preventing anemia of prematurity in infants with low birth weight and gestational age
DosageGuidelines
- Evaluate iron stores and nutritional factors before treatment
- Monitor hemoglobin levels at least weekly when initiating or adjusting therapy
- Adjust therapy based on hemoglobin rate of rise, decline, and ESA responsiveness
- Administer Erythropoietin alfa intravenously or subcutaneously based on CKD status
AdministrationInstructions
- Do not shake or use shaken/frozen Erythropoietin alfa
- Protect syringe from light
- Inspect visually for particulate matter or discoloration before administration
- Discard unused portions
Interaction
May be potentiated by simultaneous therapeutic administration of a haematinic agent like ferrous sulphate
Contraindications
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
- Developed Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin
