Indications
- palliative treatment of advanced carcinoma of the breast
- palliative treatment of advanced carcinoma of the endometrium
- treatment of anorexia in AIDS patients
- treatment of cachexia in AIDS patients

Pharmacology

Dosage & Administration
- tablet dosage for breast cancer: 160 mg/day
- tablet dosage for endometrial carcinoma: 40-320 mg/day in divided doses
- adequate period for determining efficacy
- oral suspension dosage: 800 mg/day (20 ml/day)
Interaction
- lack of investigation into interactions with concomitant medications
- potential for fluid retention with high dosages or prolonged use
Contraindications
- history of hypersensitivity to Megestrol Acetate
- history of hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- known or suspected pregnancy

- frequent side effect of weight gain
- weight gain associated with increased appetite
- thromboembolic phenomena including thrombophlebitis and pulmonary embolism
- glucocorticoid effects
- nausea
- dyspnea
- tumor flare
- hyperglycemia
- glucose intolerance
- alopecia
- hypertension
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- mood changes
- hot flashes
- malaise
- asthenia
- lethargy
- sweating
- rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category D
- not recommended during the first four months of pregnancy
- excretion in mother's milk
- potential adverse effects on the newborn
- discontinuation of nursing during treatment
Precautions & Warnings
- close surveillance for recurrent or metastatic cancer patients
- use with caution in patients with a history of thromboembolic disease
- exacerbation of preexisting diabetes with increased insulin requirements
Use in Special Populations
- safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients
- insufficient data for patients 65 years and older
Overdose Effects
- no serious unexpected side effects reported at dosages up to 1600 mg/day
