Indications

  • Fluid retention associated with chronic congestive cardiac failure
  • Fluid retention associated with acute congestive cardiac failure
  • Fluid retention associated with chronic renal failure
  • Maintenance of fluid excretion in acute renal failure
  • Fluid retention associated with nephrotic syndrome
  • Fluid retention associated with liver disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hypertensive crisis
  • Support of forced diuresis
  • Maintenance of fluid excretion in acute renal failure due to pregnancy or burns

Pharmacology

  • Monosulphonyl diuretic

Dosage & Administration

  • Initial adult dose of 40 mg daily (reduced as required)

Interaction

  • Marked fall in blood pressure when ACE inhibitors are added
  • Increased serum lithium levels when given concomitantly
  • Increased toxic effects of nephrotoxic antibiotics

Contraindications

  • Anuria
  • Electrolyte deficiency
  • Pre-comatose states associated with liver cirrhosis
  • Hypersensitivity to furosemide or sulphonamides

Side Effects

  • Disturbance in electrolytes and water balance
  • Potential for alkalosis
  • Possibility of uric acid retention
  • Risk for provoking hyperglycemia and glycosuria

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy category C
  • Caution in cardiogenic shock and the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Monitoring of blood pressure and pulse during rapid diuresis
  • Potential inhibition of lactation or passage into breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Increased risk of acute retention in patients with prostatic hypertrophy or impairment of micturition
  • Special caution when ACE inhibitors are added to Frusin therapy
  • Increased risk with concomitant administration of nephrotoxic antibiotics
  • Adverse effects on concentration and reaction abilities
