Indications
- Prophylactic management of mild, moderate, or severe asthma in adults or children
- Effective anti-inflammatory action in the lungs
- Lower incidence and severity of adverse effects compared to systemic corticosteroids
- Treatment for patients requiring symptomatic bronchodilator asthma medication
- For patients with unstable or worsening asthma despite prophylactic therapy or bronchodilator alone

Pharmacology
- Produces anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor effects

- Hydrolyzed to active metabolite beclomethasone-17-monopropionate (B-17-MP)
Dosage
- For oral inhalation use only
- Starting dose appropriate to severity of disease
- Dose adjustment until control is achieved
- Reduced to minimum effective dose according to individual response
- Usual starting dose for adults is 200 micrograms twice a day
- Higher starting dose for more severe cases
- Total daily dose may be administered as two, three, or four divided doses
- Starting dose for children is 50 to 100 micrograms two, three, or four times daily in accordance to the response
- Alternatively, 100 micrograms or 200 micrograms twice daily for children
- No need to increase the dose in patients with hepatic or renal impairment
Administration
- Correct and regular use prevents or lessens the severity of asthma attacks
- Instructions for effective use according to National Asthma Guidelines for Medical Practitioners
- Recommendations for cleaning the inhaler at least once a week
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the components
- Special care in patients with active or quiescent pulmonary tuberculosis
Side Effects
- Systemic effects of inhaled corticosteroids at high doses
- Possible systemic effects include Cushing's syndrome, Cushingoid features, and adrenal suppression
- Growth retardation in children and adolescents
- Decrease in bone mineral density
- Cataract and glaucoma
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Inadequate evidence of safety in human pregnancy
- Administration of corticosteroids to pregnant animals can cause abnormalities of fetal development
- Therapeutic benefits versus potential hazards to the mother and baby
Precautions & Warnings
- Proper use of the inhaler and regular use for optimum benefit
- Patients should be instructed in the proper use of the inhaler and have their technique checked to ensure drug reaches target areas within the lungs
