Indications
- Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
- Relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
Pharmacology
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties
- Mode of action not fully known
- Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Available in 500mg and 750mg tablets
- 1000mg tablet can be mixed in water and taken
- Recommended starting dose of 1000mg
- Can be taken with or without food
- Maximum doses for renal insufficiency patients
- No established safety and effectiveness for pediatric patients
Interaction
- NSAIDs may diminish the antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
- Not recommended for patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Not to be used for peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects: diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea, vomiting
- Central Nervous System effects: dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased sweating, insomnia, nervousness
- Dermatologic effects: pruritus, rash
- Special Senses: tinnitus
- Miscellaneous: edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category C drug
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Not recommended during the third trimester
- Not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Association with abnormal renal pathology in animals
- Risk of renal toxicity in patients with reduced renal blood flow or volume
- Patients at greatest risk include those with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, and the elderly
- Discontinuation typically followed by recovery to the pretreatment state
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms may include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain
- Supportive care recommended
- No specific antidotes
- Gastrointestinal bleeding, hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, and coma may occur but are rare
