Pharmacology
Furosemide is a monosulphonyl diuretic that affects renal tubular function and electrolyte reabsorption.
Interaction
- ACE Inhibitors may cause a marked fall in blood pressure
- Concomitant use with lithium or nephrotoxic antibiotics may increase toxicity
Contraindications
- Anuria
- Electrolyte Deficiency
- Pre-comatose states associated with liver cirrhosis
- Hypersensitivity to furosemide or sulphonamides

- Risk of marked fall in blood pressure with ACE inhibitors
- Risk of increased toxicity with nephrotoxic antibiotics
- Caution in situations requiring focus and reaction abilities
Overdose Effects
- Dependent on extent of electrolyte and fluid loss
- Symptoms may include hypovolaemia, dehydration, cardiac arrhythmias
- No specific antidote; Measures to limit further absorption may be considered
