Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
  • Target organisms: Aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms
  • Susceptible strains: Corynebacterium species, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, etc.

Pharmacology

  • Antimicrobial action through inhibition of topoisomerase II and IV
  • Inhibition of DNA gyrase involved in DNA replication, transcription, and repair

Dosage & Administration

  • One drop in affected eye(s) 2 times daily for 7 days

Interaction

  • No conducted drug-drug interaction studies

Side Effects

  • Reported ocular adverse events in 1-6% patients
  • Frequently reported adverse events: eye irritation, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, etc.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
  • No adequate and well-documented studies in pregnant women
  • Potential excretion in human milk
  • Caution when administered to breastfeeding mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi

  • Safety and effectiveness in infants below four months not proven
  • Clinical studies show safe use in children younger than one month
