Description
A clear, almost colorless and sterile solution of Mannitol BP, primarily used by IV infusion as an osmotic diuretic to preserve renal function in acute renal failure and to reduce raised intracranial and intraocular pressure. Also used as an irrigating solution to prevent hemolysis and hemoglobin buildup during transurethral prostatic resection.

- Child Dosage (renal insufficiency): 2 gm/kg or 60 gm/m^2 of body surface area
- Child Dosage (cerebral edema, elevated intracranial pressure, elevated intraocular pressure): 1 to 2 gm/kg body wt. or 30 to 60 gm/m^2 of body surface area
- Contraindications: Pulmonary edema, Congestive heart failure, Inadequate urine flow, Dehydration, Acidosis, Intracranial bleeding, Renal failure
- Side Effects: Fluid and electrolytes imbalance, Circulatory overload, Acidosis, Nausea, Vomiting, Thirst, Headache, Dizziness, Fever, Tachycardia, Chest pain, Hyponatraemia, Dehydration, Blurred vision, Urticaria, Hypertension, Hypotension
- Pregnancy & Lactation: Safety not established, Consider risk-benefit ratio for administration in lactating mothers
- Precautions: Monitor rate of administration, Avoid circulatory overloading, Discontinue if signs of progressive renal dysfunction or heart failure appear, Do not administer with whole blood, Discontinue infusion if solution is cloudy or contains particles, Use before expiry date, Monitor for rigor
