Indications

  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum antibiotic
  • Bactericidal action
  • Inhibition of enzymes responsible for cell-wall synthesis
  • Activity against gram-negative and gram-positive organisms

Dosage

  • Usual adult dosage of 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
  • Dosage based on severity of infection and patient's renal function
  • Dosage range for adults: 1 to 6 gm per day
  • Dosage range for children: 30 to 100 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage for neonates and children up to 2 months of age: 25 to 60 mg/kg/day

Administration

  • Intravenous or deep IM injection administration
  • Reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excretion in human milk in low concentrations

Precautions & Warnings

  • Reduced dosage for patients with renal insufficiency
  • Caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage reduction for impaired renal function
  • Use in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
  • No dosage adjustment for patients with hepatic dysfunction

  • Seizure activity
  • Encephalopathy
  • Neuromuscular excitability
  • Coma
