Indications
- Treatment of pneumonia and nosocomial pneumonia

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Potent bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
Dosage
- Recommended daily dosage for adults and children
- Different dosage for various types of infections and patient conditions
- Dosage based on intravenous administration
- Dosage based on weight for children
- No experience in children with hepatic or renal impairment
Administration
- Intravenous infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes
- Intravenous bolus over approximately 3-5 minutes
Interaction
- Competes with probenecid for active tubular secretion
- Inhibits renal excretion, increasing elimination half-life and plasma concentration of meropenem
- May reduce serum valproic acid levels
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the product
Side Effects
- Inflammation at the site of injection
- Thrombophlebitis
- Skin reactions like rash, pruritus, and urticaria
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Allergic reaction - discontinue if occurs
- Use in patients with hepatic disease with careful monitoring of transaminase and bilirubin levels
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustments for renal impairment
- No dosage adjustments for hepatic impairment
- No dosage adjustments for elderly patients unless creatinine clearance is <51 ml/min
- Efficacy and tolerability not established in infants under 3 months
Overdose Effects
- Accidental overdose could occur, particularly in patients with renal impairment
- Treatment should be symptomatic
- Rapid renal elimination in normal individuals
- Hemodialysis for removal in subjects with renal impairment

Reconstitution
- Preparation of solution for intravenous bolus and infusion administration
- Compatible infusion fluids for intravenous infusion administration
- Freshly reconstituted solution recommended
