Indications

Pharmacology
- Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
- Good stability to beta lactamases
- Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria
- Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
- Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in urine in 12 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage for different indications
- Infant and pediatric patient dosage for different indications
- Dosing adjustments for patients with renal dysfunction
- No dose adjustment necessary for patients with liver cirrhosis
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids
- Interaction with H 2 blockers
- Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid
- Close monitoring of renal function with nephrotoxic drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Common side effects including diarrhea, nausea, fungal infections, abdominal pain, headache
- Incidence of fungal skin rash higher in children
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not teratogenic or embryocidal in animal trials
- Limited human study data in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Choice between breastfeeding and drug discontinuation
Precautions & Warnings
- Dose reduction in patients with reduced urinary output
- Caution in patients on concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
