Description

  • A combination of Dexamethasone (glucocorticoid) and Ciprofloxacin for the treatment of ocular and ear infections accompanied by inflammation.

Indications

  • Treatment of steroid responsive inflammatory ocular conditions
  • Treatment of ocular inflammation associated with infection
  • Ear infections accompanied by inflammation
  • Post-operative inflammation in the eye and ear

Pharmacology

  • Dexamethasone has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action
  • Ciprofloxacin has in vitro activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms

Dosage & Administration

  • 1 drop to be instilled into conjunctival sac(s) every four to six hours for eye
  • 4 drops instilled into the affected ear 2 times daily for 7 days for ear infections
  • Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below 1 year have not been established

Interaction

  • Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with ophthalmic Ciprofloxacin and Dexamethasone
  • Systemic administration of some quinolones may elevate plasma concentrations of theophylline, interfere with the metabolism of caffeine, enhance the effects of oral anticoagulants, and elevate serum creatinine in patients receiving cyclosporin concomitantly

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the product
  • Herpes simplex and other viral conditions
  • Mycosis
  • Glaucoma
  • Newborn babies
  • Fungal diseases of ocular or auricular structures

Side Effects

  • Eye: Transient ocular burning or discomfort, stinging, redness, itching, conjunctivitis/keratitis, periocular/facial edema, foreign body sensation, photophobia, blurred vision, tearing, dryness, eye pain, elevation of intraocular pressure, optic nerve damage, cataract formation
  • Ear: Ear pain, irritability, dizziness, erythema

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus
  • Caution should be exercised when using this product during nursing

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consider the possibility of fungal infections of the cornea after long-term steroid dosing
  • Prolonged use of antibiotic may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Prolonged use of topical ophthalmic steroids may result in glaucoma, visual acuity defects, and cataract formation
  • Intraocular pressure should be routinely monitored
