Feroplus TR 200 mg+200 mcg (Capsule (Timed Release))

Indications

• Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
• Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy

Pharmacology

• Iron is essential for haemoglobin formation and oxidative processes
• Iron deficiency anaemia caused by chronic hemorrhage, nutritional deficiency, pregnancy, parasite infestation, malabsorption
• Folic acid deficiency leads to megaloblastic anaemia, especially during pregnancy
• Folic acid and ferrous fumerate combination prevents depletion of body folate
• Iron and Folic acid absorbed in proximal small intestine, particularly duodenum

Dosage & Administration

• Adults: One tablet daily, may be given twice daily when necessary
• In pregnancy, recommended to start at first antenatal consultation and continue for 3 months after delivery
• Preferably taken before meals, can be taken after meals if there are gastrointestinal disturbances

Interaction

• Absorption of iron salts and tetracycline diminished when taken concomitantly
• Iron salt absorption decreased in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
• Iron salts reduce effects of penicillamine
• Co-trimoxazole may inhibit megaloblastic haemopoiesis
• Administration of folate may reduce serum anticonvulsant levels

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients with pernicious anaemia and anaemia not due to iron deficiency
• Absorption inhibited by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate

Side Effects

• Nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal symptoms, constipation, diarrhea

Precautions & Warnings

• Administration during the first trimester of pregnancy may be undesirable
• Investigate further if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis
• Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

• Gastric lavage for overdose
• Symptomatic treatment as necessary
• Administer chelating agent to eliminate excess free iron
