Indications

  • Short-term management of post-operative pain
  • Relieves pain and inflammation after ocular surgery
  • Decreases eye inflammation caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Belongs to pyrrolo-pyrrole group of NSAIDs
  • Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
  • Associated with S-form biological activity
  • Metabolized in the liver

Pharmacology

  • Acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose

Dosage & administration

  • Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours, short-term use only
  • Injection for acute pain management, single or multiple doses
  • Recommended doses for different age groups and conditions
  • Eye drops dosage: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Increased side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
  • Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
  • Reduced anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
  • Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE inhibitors
  • Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Not recommended for use in children under 16 years of age
  • Contraindicated as prophylactic analgesic before surgery

  • Nausea, vomiting, gastro-intestinal bleeding
  • Anxiety, drowsiness, headache
  • Excessive thirst, fatigue, bradycardia, hypertension
  • Infertility in females, pulmonary edema

  • Should be avoided in pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks

Precautions & warnings

  • Caution in patients over 65 years
  • Caution in patients with peptic ulcer, G.I. bleeding, asthma, liver dysfunction
  • Patients with corneal epithelial breakdown should discontinue use and monitor closely
  • Avoid administration while wearing contact lenses
