Indications

  • Treatment or prevention of bronchospasm in adults, adolescents, and children 6 years of age and older with reversible obstructive airway disease

Pharmacology

  • Levosalbutamol is a single isomer beta 2-agonist
  • Primary mechanism of action is unimpeded by (S)-salbutamol

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet dosage for adults and adolescents above 12 years: 1-2 mg three times daily
  • Tablet dosage for children (6 -11 years): 1 mg three times daily
  • Syrup dosage for adults: 5-10 ml three times daily
  • Syrup dosage for children (6-11 years): 5 ml three times daily

Interaction

  • Use caution with other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine
  • Adrenergic drugs should be used with caution to avoid deleterious cardiovascular effects

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any of its components

  • Hypocalcemia
  • Palpitation
  • Fine tremors of the skeletal muscle
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Burning substernal or epigastric pain
  • Diarrhea

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk of the fetus
  • Caution when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Particular caution advised in acute severe asthma
  • Effect may be potentiated by hypoxia and by concomitant treatment with xanthine derivatives, steroids, and diuretics
  • Monitor serum potassium levels in acute severe asthma

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms of excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation
  • Stomach should be emptied in the event of serious poisoning
  • Beta-blocker administered with caution in patients with a history of bronchospasm

Therapeutic Class

  • Short-acting selective & β2-adrenoceptor stimulants
