Indications

  • Steroid responsive inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
  • Corneal inflammatory conditions
  • Allergic conjunctivitis
  • Acne rosacea
  • Superficial punctate keratitis
  • Herpes zoster keratitis
  • Iritis and cyclitis
  • Post-operative inflammation
  • Post-operative pain following ocular surgery

Pharmacology

  • Inhibition of inflammatory response
  • Edema reduction
  • Fibrin deposition inhibition
  • Capillary dilation suppression
  • Leukocyte migration inhibition
  • Fibroblast proliferation suppression

  • Scar formation delay or reduction

Dosage & Administration

  • 0.5% ophthalmic suspension: For steroid responsive ocular inflammation - Instill 1 drop four times a day
  • 0.5% ophthalmic suspension: For inflammation after surgery - Instill 1 drop four times a day for the first two weeks after surgery
  • 1% ophthalmic suspension: For steroid responsive ocular inflammation - Instill 1 drop two times a day
  • 1% ophthalmic suspension: For inflammation after surgery - Instill 1 drop two times a day for the first two weeks after surgery
  • 0.5% ophthalmic ointment: Apply a small amount four times a day for the first 2 weeks after surgery
  • Ophthalmic gel: Instill one to two drops four times a day for the first 2 weeks after surgery
  • Use in children: Safety and effectiveness not established
  • Geriatric Use: No overall differences in safety and effectiveness observed

Interaction

  • Not expected to affect the pharmacokinetics of systemically administered medicinal products

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in most viral diseases of the cornea
  • Contraindicated in most viral diseases of the conjunctiva
  • Contraindicated in mycobacterial infection of the eye
  • Contraindicated in fungal diseases of ocular structures
  • Contraindicated in known or suspected hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
  • Contraindicated in known or suspected hypersensitivity to other corticosteroids

Side Effects

  • Elevated intraocular pressure
  • Optic nerve damage
  • Visual acuity and field defects
  • Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
  • Secondary ocular infection from pathogens
  • Perforation of the globe where there is thinning of the cornea or sclera
  • Ocular adverse reactions: abnormal vision/blurring, burning on instillation, chemosis, discharge, dry eyes, epiphora, foreign body sensation, itching, injection and photophobia
  • Ocular adverse reactions (less common): conjunctivitis, corneal abnormalities, eyelid erythema, keratoconjunctivitis, ocular irritation/pain/discomfort, papillae
  • Non-ocular adverse reactions: headache, rhinitis, pharyngitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Caution advised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Re-evaluation after two days if signs and symptoms fail to improve
  • Intraocular pressure monitoring if used for 10 days or longer
  • Consideration of fungus invasion in persistent corneal ulceration
  • Physician consultation if redness or itching becomes aggravated
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses during the therapy

Storage Conditions

  • Store at below 30 degree C in a dry place protected from light
  • Do not touch tube tip to any surface
  • Avoid use after one month of first opening
