Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis: Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma and allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for adults and adolescents 15 years and older: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 2 to 5 years of age: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 months to 5 years of age: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
- No dosage adjustment in hepatic or renal insufficiency patients
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults
Interaction
- No apparent increase in adverse reactions when administered with other therapies
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common side effects: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache
- Uncommon side effects: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, sleep disorders
- Rare side effects: Angioedema, hallucination, memory loss, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised when given to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity
Overdose Effects
- Most frequently occurring adverse experiences include abdominal pain, somnolence, headache
- Usual supportive measures to be employed in case of overdose
