Indications

  • Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
  • Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)

Pharmacology

  • Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
  • Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
  • Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma and allergic rhinitis

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for adults and adolescents 15 years and older: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
  • Dosage for pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
  • Dosage for pediatric patients 2 to 5 years of age: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
  • Dosage for pediatric patients 6 months to 5 years of age: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
  • No dosage adjustment in hepatic or renal insufficiency patients
  • Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults

Interaction

  • No apparent increase in adverse reactions when administered with other therapies
  • No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
  • Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product

  • Common side effects: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache
  • Uncommon side effects: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, sleep disorders
  • Rare side effects: Angioedema, hallucination, memory loss, tremor

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution advised when given to nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not for use in acute asthma attacks
  • Appropriate rescue medication should be available
  • Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
  • Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
  • Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise-induced bronchospasm
  • Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity

Overdose Effects

  • Most frequently occurring adverse experiences include abdominal pain, somnolence, headache
  • Usual supportive measures to be employed in case of overdose
