Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of Aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms
  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of Aerobic Gram-negative microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Antimicrobial action resulting from inhibition of topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase)
  • Topoisomerase IV inhibition
  • Involvement in replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA
  • Key role in partitioning of chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division

Dosage & Administration

  • One drop in the affected eye(s) 2 times daily for 7 days

Interaction

  • No drug-drug interaction studies conducted with Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride

Side Effects

  • Ocular adverse events: eye irritation, pyrexia, conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, tearing
  • Reported in 1-6% of patients

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
  • No adequate and well-documented studies in pregnant women
  • Moxifloxacin excretion in human milk presumed
  • Caution when administered to a breastfeeding mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi

Use in Special Populations

  • Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness in infants below four months not proven
  • The drug may be used safely in children even younger than one month of age
  • No observed differences in safety and effectiveness between elderly and younger patients

Overdose Effects

  • Practically no risk of adverse effects due to accidental ingestion
  • Bottle of 5 ml eye drops solution contains only 25 mg Moxifloxacin, much lower than recommended daily oral dose

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool and dry place away from light
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Do not touch the dropper tip to surfaces to avoid contamination
  • Do not use the medicine after one month of the first opening
