Indications

Treatment of ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea
Susceptible organisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp, Moraxella lacunata, Neisseria species

Pharmacology

Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
Interference with transfer of activated amino acids from soluble RNA to ribosomes

Dosage & Administration

Instill 1-2 drops in the conjunctival sac 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours
Then every 4 hours thereafter
Treatment duration approximately 7 days
Not to be continued for more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation by physician

Interaction

Inhibition of Chymotrypsin if given simultaneously with the medicine

Contraindications

History of hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients of the preparation

Pregnancy & Lactation

Safety not established for use in pregnancy and lactation
Use only when considered essential by physicians

Precautions & Warnings

Not for minor infections or prophylaxis
Avoid repeated course and prolonged treatment
Risk of blood dyscrasias (granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, moderate anemia) after prolonged ophthalmic use

Overdose Effects

Accidental ingestion unlikely to cause toxicity due to low antibiotic content
