Indications

Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
  • Used in the treatment of intestinal nematode infections
  • Used in higher doses for the treatment of hydatid disease
  • Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
  • Inhibits tubulin polymerization resulting in the loss of cytoplasmic microtubules

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activities
  • Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths, depleting energy level for survival
  • Binds and inhibits parasite tubulin polymerization
  • Extensively metabolized, likely in the liver
  • Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract

Dosage & Administration

  • 400 mg (1 tablet or 10 ml suspension) as a single dose for various infections
  • Daily doses for strongyloidiasis or taeniasis for 3 consecutive days
  • Recommended single dose for children of 1-2 years: 200 mg (5 ml suspension)
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year
  • Dose for hydatid disease (Echinococcosis) varies based on patient weight
  • 5-day treatment course for giardiasis

Interaction

  • No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions

Contraindications

  • Not normally used in neonates
  • Dose reduction may be indicated in children weighing less than 10 kg
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or for women thought to be pregnant
  • No evidence to alter dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure

  • Constant medical supervision and monitoring for Echinococcosis treatment
