Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Prevent microbial contaminations in burns
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing
- Dry eye conditions
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and povidone polymer
- Rapid microbicidal activity
- Non-staining
- Active against bacteria, viruses, and fungi
Dosage Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for maximum of 14 days
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- Apply a light dusting of powder to affected area
- 1 drop 4 times daily for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Interacts with strong alkali
- Exhibits interaction with sodium thiosulphate and thiomersal
- Hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Thyroid disorders
- Severe burnt patients
- Children under 2 years of age
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Skin and mucous membrane irritation
- Systemic adverse effects with severe burns
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding
- Avoid in pregnant and lactating women for gargle & surgical scrub
- Not recommended in human pregnancy or lactation for ophthalmic solution
Precautions Warnings
- Consult physician for deep wounds or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged use leading to iodine absorption
- Special caution for broken skin and renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in children under 6 years of age
- Caution for patients with known iodine sensitivity
