Indications
- Steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions
- Chronic anterior uveities
- Corneal injury from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns
- Penetration of foreign bodies
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity of Tobramycin
- Inhibition of normal protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria
- Inhibition of phospholipase A2 by Dexamethasone
- Inhibition of chemo-tactic infiltration of neutrophils by Dexamethasone
Dosage and Administration
- 1 drop into conjunctival sac 3-5 times per day (Eye Drops)
- 1 drop every 2 hours for 24-48 hours (Initial dosage)
- Apply small amount into conjunctival sac 3-4 times per day (Eye Ointment)
- Pediatric use below 2 years not established
Interaction
- No specific interaction studies conducted with Tobram-D eye drops
- Interval of 10 minutes recommended between successive applications if therapy with other topical ophthalmic medicines is concomitant
Contraindications
- Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis
- Vaccinia
- Varicella
- Mycobacterial infection of the eye
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity
- Localized ocular toxicity
- Elevation of intraocular pressure
- Optic nerve damage
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
Pregnancy and Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy justified only if potential benefit exceeds potent risk to fetus
- Caution during nursing due to unknown systemic absorption in human milk
Precautions and Warnings
- Consider possibility of fungal infections after long-term steroid dosing
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
- Cross-sensitivity to other aminoglycoside antibiotics may occur
Overdose Effects
- Overdose through local administration not known
- Specific measures to reduce resorption in case of accidental oral intake
- No specific antidote available

Storage Conditions
- Store at room temperature
- Close bottle immediately after use
