Indications
- Prevent or treat low blood calcium levels
- Used in conditions like osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, latent tetany, postmenopausal osteoporosis, etc.
Pharmacology
- Contains Calcium Orotate with orotic acid as a chelating ligand
- Facilitates intracellular uptake of calcium in bones
- Helps in the maintenance of healthy cartilage
- Involved in the synthesis of DNA and RNA
Dosage & Administration
- Calcium Orotate 400 mg: 2-3 tablets recommended with a meal
- Calcium Orotate 740 mg: 1-2 tablets recommended with a meal
Interaction
- Can decrease absorption of certain drugs like biphosphonates, quinolone antibiotics, tetracycline antibiotics, levothyroxine, phenytoin, etc.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in conditions like incomplete or infrequent bowel movements, kidney stone, kidney disease, increased parathyroid gland activity, high urinary or blood calcium levels, extreme loss of body water
Side Effects
- Bloating and swelling in the abdomen
- Loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, nausea, vomiting
- Unusual weight loss, increased thirst/urination, weakness, unusual tiredness
- Formation of kidney stones may occur infrequently
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women need more calcium
- Can help reduce the risk of pregnancy-related high blood pressure
