Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Reduction of risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
- Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor
- Reduces renal absorption of glucose
- Contributes to reduced hyperglycemia, weight loss, and reduced blood pressure
Dosage and Administration
- Recommended dose: 10 mg once daily in the morning
- Can be taken with or without food
- Dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily in tolerant patients
Interaction
- Increased urine volume when co-administered with diuretics
- Increased risk for hypoglycemia when co-administered with insulin or insulin secretagogues
- Risk of false positive urine glucose tests and unreliable 1,5-AG assay results
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Empagliflozin or its ingredients
- Severe renal impairment
- End-stage renal disease or dialysis

- Dizziness
- Increased thirstiness
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Not recommended during breastfeeding
Precautions and Warnings
- Assessment of renal function prior to initiation and periodically thereafter
- Not recommended in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m2
- No dose adjustment needed for eGFR greater than or equal to 45 ml/min/1.73 m2
Overdose Effects
- Employ usual supportive measures in the event of an overdose
- Hemodialysis has not been studied for removal of Evania
