Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits degranulation of mast cells
- Inhibits release of cytokines like tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF α)
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents (over 12 years) is 10 mg once a day
- Recommended dose for children aged 2 to 11 years based on weight
Interaction
- Increased systemic exposure with concomitant administration with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution required when co-administered with statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Inhibition of grapefruit and grapefruit juice consumption
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any excipients
Side Effects
- Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: Appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, concentration impaired, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dry throat, epistaxis, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, increased risk of infection, irritability, malaise, myalgia, nasal dryness, nausea, oropharyngeal pain, rash, thirst, vomiting, weight increased
- Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No clinical data available on exposure during pregnancy
- Not recommended during lactation unless potential benefits justify potential risk to the infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of QT interval
- Use with caution in elderly patients (65 years and older)
Use in Special Populations
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Safety and efficacy not established in patients less than 12 years of age
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Common adverse reaction: somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment and supportive measures for accidental ingestion of very high doses
