Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action
  • Inhibition of cell-wall synthesis
  • Active against gram-negative and gram-positive organisms
  • Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases

Dosage

  • Usual adult dosage 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
  • Dosage depends on severity, sensitivity, type of infection, age, weight, and renal function
  • Different dosages for urinary tract infections, severe infections, elderly, cystic fibrosis, infants, children and neonates

Administration

  • Intravenous or deep IM injection
  • Reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection
  • Administered by parenteral route

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Local reactions following IV injection
  • Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, fever
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, paresthesia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited data in pregnant women, use only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in low concentrations in human milk, decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or drug

Precautions & Warnings

  • Reduced dosage in renal insufficiency
  • Caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage adjustment in impaired renal function
  • Usage in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
  • No dosage adjustment for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Overdose Effects

  • Occurs in patients with renal failure
  • Reactions include seizure activity, encephalopathy, coma
  • Careful observation and supportive treatment for acute overdosage
