Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action
- Inhibition of cell-wall synthesis
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive organisms
- Stable to most clinically important beta-lactamases
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage depends on severity, sensitivity, type of infection, age, weight, and renal function
- Different dosages for urinary tract infections, severe infections, elderly, cystic fibrosis, infants, children and neonates
Administration
- Intravenous or deep IM injection
- Reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection
- Administered by parenteral route
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions like pruritus, rash, fever
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system reactions like headache, dizziness, paresthesia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data in pregnant women, use only if clearly needed
- Excreted in low concentrations in human milk, decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or drug
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced dosage in renal insufficiency
- Caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment in impaired renal function
- Usage in peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- No dosage adjustment for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Occurs in patients with renal failure
- Reactions include seizure activity, encephalopathy, coma
- Careful observation and supportive treatment for acute overdosage
