Indications
- Treatment for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment for Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Effective against Streptococcus pyogenes
- Effective against Escherichia coli
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Orally active third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40%-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be extended to 14 days if necessary
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children over 10 years is same as recommended adult dose
- Dosage for children aged 6 months up to 10 years is based on body weight
- Special dosage recommendation for typhoid treatment
- Cautious dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
Interaction
- May cause increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Care needed when used with anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials

- Other gastrointestinal side-effects include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
- Central nervous system side-effects like headache and dizziness

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution advised when used during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Administer with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon and risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote available
- Not significantly removed by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
