Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
Mode of action
- Bactericidal mechanism through cell wall synthesis interference
Dosage administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Usual adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to infection severity
- Adolescents & children over 10 years: Recommended adult dosage
- Elderly patients: Same dose as recommended for adults, adjusted in severe renal impairment
- Children: Recommended dosage is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage in Typhoid: Recommended children dose is 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
- Dosage in Renal Impairment: Administered with caution
Interaction
- Potential increases in prothrombin times in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy lactation
- Limited data in pregnant women, caution during use in lactating women
Precautions warnings
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Potential alteration of normal colon flora leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
Overdose effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- No significant removal via hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
