Dosage and Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued up to 14 days
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, as single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day administered as single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage for children in terms of volume of suspension
Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in synthesis of bacterial cell wall
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Caution with patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea and stool changes
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence
- Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions like rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects
- Other possible reactions including genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution required during pregnancy
- Not known if excreted in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution with patients showing hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution with penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
