Dosage and Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued up to 14 days
  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily, as single dose or in two divided doses
  • Dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day administered as single dose or in two divided doses
  • Dosage for children in terms of volume of suspension

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes in synthesis of bacterial cell wall

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times in some patients
  • Caution with patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea and stool changes
  • Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence
  • Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like rash, pruritis, urticaria
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry effects
  • Other possible reactions including genital pruritis and vaginitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Caution required during pregnancy
  • Not known if excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution with patients showing hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution with penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
