Formulation

Molecular Structure
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
Absorption
- About 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Treatment Duration
- Usual course is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
Dosage in Adults
- 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection, given either as a single dose or in two divided doses
Dosage in Children over 10 years
- Same as recommended for adults
Dosage in Children
- 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
Dosage in Children with typhoid
- 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
Storage
- Keep below 30°C temperature, protected from light & moisture, out of reach of children
Mode of Action
- Interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
Renal Impairment Dosage
- Normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater
Precautions
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function, who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Common Side Effects
- Diarrhoea, stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence, headache, dizziness, rash, pruritus, urticaria, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
Interaction with Anticoagulant Therapy
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, caution during lactation
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated, no specific antidote exists, not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
Absorption with Food
- Not significantly modified by the presence of food

- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Urinary Tract Infections
Efficacy
- Clinical efficacy demonstrated in infections caused by Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella species, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Enterobacter species
Beta-lactamase Stability
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Allergen Information
- May contain allergens, allergen information should be provided
Gastrointestinal Disturbances
- Commonly associated with higher doses, pseudomembraneous colitis reported
Age Restrictions
- Safety and efficacy not established in children aged less than 6 months
Individual Doses
- Specific daily doses in ml for children based on age
Interaction with Contraceptives
- No evidence suggesting effect on contraceptive medications
Co-administration with Acetaminophen
- No clinically proven interactions with Acetaminophen (Paracetamol)
Instruction for Storage and Disposal
- Should be kept in a cool dry place and in its original pack, proper disposal of expired and unused medications is important to avoid health problems
Antibiotic Resistance
- Overuse increases the risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment
Concurrent Use with Penicillin
- Caution should be exercised due to partial cross-allergenicity between the penicillins and the cephalosporins
Complete Medication Course
- Do not skip doses and finish the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve
Interaction with Alcohol
- Avoid consuming alcohol while taking the medication as it may cause increased side effects
Symptom Relief Duration
- May take a few days to kill the harmful bacteria and relieve the symptoms completely
Interaction with Birth Control
- No evidence suggested effect of the medication on contraceptive medications
