Indications

  • Treatment of Iron deficiency during pregnancy
  • Prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

  • Each capsule contains Elemental iron 50 mg (as carbonyl iron INN)
  • Each capsule contains Folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Each capsule contains Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Pharmacology

  • Combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
  • High bioavailability and low toxicity of Carbonyl Iron

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: One capsule daily before food or as directed by physician

Interaction

  • Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penecillamine
  • Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics, reducing plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components
  • Contraindicated in patients with Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Possible gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea
  • Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid use during first trimester if possible
  • Justified for prophylaxis of Iron deficiency during the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care in patients with Iron overload states
  • Monitor for non-response to treatment

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms of Carbonyl Iron overdose include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak, rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
