Description

Clobetasol Propionate, Neomycin Sulphate, and Nystatin Cream + Ointment

Indications

• Short courses treatment of recalcitrant eczemas
• Neurodermatoses
• Psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis)
• Treatment of other inflammatory conditions

Pharmacology

• Clobetasol Propionate: Very potent corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory activity
• Neomycin Sulphate: Antibiotic of the aminoglycoside type
• Nystatin: Antifungal that interferes with fungal cell membranes

Dosage & Administration

• Sparingly apply once or twice daily to affected area
• Enhance anti-inflammatory effect by occluding treatment area with polythene
• Not recommended for use in neonates and infants younger than 2 years

Interaction

• Neomycin Sulphate can intensify and prolong respiratory depressant effects of neuromuscular blocking agents following systemic absorption

Contraindications

• Rosacea
• Acne vulgaris
• Perioral dermatitis
• Primary cutaneous viral infections
• Hypersensitivity to the preparation

Side Effects

• Systemic absorption with prolonged use may lead to hypercortisolism
• Local atrophic changes in the skin with prolonged and intensive treatment
• Reports of pigmentation changes and hypertrichosis with topical steroids

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Neomycin can cross the placenta and pose theoretical risk of fetal toxicity
• Safety of Clobetasol Propionate not established in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid long-term continuous topical therapy, particularly in infants and children
• Care to prevent entry into the eye, as glaucoma might result if applied to the eyelids

Overdose Effects

• Acute overdosage is very unlikely
• Features of hypercortisolism may appear with chronic overdosage or misuse
