Indications

• Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
• Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
• Routine administration of iron

Description

• General properties of iron salts
• Facilitates O2 transport via haemoglobin
• Replaces iron found in haemoglobin, myoglobin, and other enzymes

Dosage & Administration

• Initial therapeutic dose for adults
• Maintenance dose for adults
• Dosage for children
• Instructions for mixing with water or fruit juice
• Not to be mixed with milk

Interaction

• Diminished absorption when taken with Tetracycline
• Instructions for concomitant use with Tetracycline
• Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids
• Decreased absorption when taken with tea

Contraindications

• Not for patients with haemachromatosis
• Not for patients with haemosiderosis
• Not for patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
• Not for patients with anaemia not produced by iron deficiency

Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting
• Reduced side effects when taken with or immediately after food
• Possible constipation with continuous administration
• Temporary staining of teeth with liquid medication

Precautions & Warnings

• Administered with caution to patients with iron storage or absorption disease
• Administered with caution to patients with haemoglobinopathies
• Administered with caution to patients with existing gastrointestinal disease
