Indications
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of cornea and anterior segment of the globe
Pharmacology
- Prednisolone decreases inflammation by inhibiting migration of leukocytes
- Suppresses the immune system by reducing the activity and production of lymphocytes and eosinophils
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: instill one drop into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
- Paediatric usage: safety and effectiveness not established
Interaction
- No significant reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
Side Effects
- Elevation of intraocular pressure
- Possible development of glaucoma
- Optic nerve damage
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
- Fungal and viral infections of the cornea may develop coincidentally
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C: use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Shake the bottle well before use
- Prolonged use may result in damage to the optic nerve
- Defects in vision
- Intraocular pressure should be routinely monitored
Overdose Effects
- Accidental overdose generally will not cause acute problems
- Long-time overdose may show general side effects
- Sufficient water should be taken to dilute the medication in case of accidental overdose
