Description
- Potent anti-inflammatory steroid
- Greater anti-inflammatory potency than Prednisolone
- Low tendency to induce sodium and water retention
- Relative potency to Hydrocortisone is at least four to one
Pharmacology
- Potent anti-inflammatory agent

Dosage & Administration
- Usual range is 2-48 mg daily in divided doses
- Initial dosage may vary from 4-48 mg per day depending on the disease entity
- Maintenance dosage determined by decreasing initial dose gradually
- Specific dosing guideline for severe allergy and dermatitis
- Alternate-day therapy recommended for long-term pharmacologic dose treatment
Interaction
- Inhibition of metabolism by Erythromycin, Clarithromycin, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Rifampin, Ketoconazole
- Estrogens can increase corticosteroid effect by 50%
- Interaction with Cyclosporin and blood thinners like Warfarin
Contraindications
- Systemic fungal infections
- Known hypersensitivity to components

Pregnancy & Lactation

- Adrenocortical insufficiency may persist after therapy discontinuation
- Enhanced effect on patients with hypothyroidism and cirrhosis
- Cautious use in patients with ocular herpes simplex
