Indications
- Treatment of essential hypertension
- Treatment of secondary hypertension

Pharmacology
- Decrease in total peripheral vascular resistance
- Selective inhibition of alpha-1-adrenoreceptors
- Lowering of blood pressure in supine and standing positions
- Reduction in left ventricular filling pressure
- Improvement of urinary pressure profile in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapy with a low starting dose
- Dosage adjustment based on patient's response
- Maintenance dosage of 20 mg for hypertension
- Titration of dosage for left ventricular failure
- Recommended starting dosage for Raynaud's phenomenon and disease
- Usual maintenance dosage for benign prostatic hyperplasia
Interaction
- No adverse drug interactions reported with cardiac glycosides, hypoglycemic agents, tranquilizers and sedatives, antiarrhythmic agents, analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents
Contraindications
- Known sensitivity to quinazolines

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised for patients prone to postural hypotension
- Careful monitoring and adjustment of diuretic dosage for left ventricular failure patients
- Close blood pressure monitoring for patients with existing lower blood pressure
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
- Not recommended for left ventricular failure due to mechanical obstruction
- Efficacy not established in left ventricular failure due to recent myocardial infarction
Overdose Effects
- Profound drowsiness and depressed reflexes in pediatric accidental ingestion
- Support of the cardiovascular system as first importance
- Monitoring and support of renal function as needed
