Description

  • Doxolar is a bronchodilator used to treat bronchial asthma, bronchospasm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary disease with a spastic bronchial component.

Indications

  • Bronchial asthma
  • Bronchospasm
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component

Pharmacology

  • Novel bronchodilator
  • Selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4
  • Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
  • Inhibits platelet activating factor (PAF)
  • Inhibits leukotriene production

Dosage & Administration

  • 200 mg tablet two or three times daily for Elderly
  • 400 mg tablet two or three times daily for Adults
  • 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily for >12 years of age
  • 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily for 6-12 years of age
  • Doxophylline SR tablet for daily dose of 400 mg
  • Dosage as prescribed by the physician

Interactions

  • Should not be administered with other xanthine preparations
  • Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
  • Caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
  • Concurrent administration with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, and propanolol may affect hepatic clearance
  • Phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, and cigarette smoking may increase clearance

  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Hypotension
  • Lactation

  • Congestive cardiac decompensation
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Severe liver disease
  • Concomitant infections
  • Monitoring blood levels for therapeutic range control
  • Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment

Overdose Effects

  • Severe cardiac arrhythmias
  • Tonic-clonic seizure
  • Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse
