Indications
- Prevention of uterine atony
- Prevention of postpartum hemorrhage
- For elective caesarean section under epidural or spinal anaesthesia
Pharmacology
- Carbetocin is an analogue of oxytocin
- Causes contraction of the uterus
- Binds to oxytocin receptors in the uterus
- Increases uterine tone
Dosage & Administration
- Single intravenous dose of 100 mcg
- Administered by bolus injection over 1 minute
- Only after completion of caesarean section
Interaction
- No specific reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Should not be administered prior to delivery
- Should not be used for induction of labor
- Not for patients with hypersensitivity to oxytocin or carbetocin
- Not for patients with cardiovascular disease
- Not intended for use in children

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Contraindicated during pregnancy
- Small amounts may transfer to breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- More aggressive treatment needed if inadequate uterine contraction
- Hyponatremia may occur
- Use cautiously in epilepsy, migraine, asthma patients
- Monitor blood pressure in eclampsia and pre-eclampsia patients
- Not recommended for elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Enhanced uterine hyperactivity and pain
- Requires symptomatic and supportive management
