Indications

  • Monotherapy for Parkinson's disease
  • Adjunct therapy for Parkinson's disease

Pharmacology

  • Irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor
  • Increases extracellular levels of dopamine
  • Beneficial effects in models of dopaminergic motor dysfunction

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dose: 1 mg orally once daily
  • Initial dose: 0.5 mg once daily in patients taking levodopa
  • Pediatric use: Safety & effectiveness not established
  • Geriatric use: No significant safety profile differences

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated with meperidine, tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene
  • Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors (MAOIs)

  • Hepatic impairment dosing consideration
  • Avoid concomitant use with certain medicinal products
