Description
- A vitamin D3 supplement that is essential for calcium and phosphate absorption, promoting healthy bones and teeth, preventing rickets, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis. It also plays a vital role in boosting immunity and preventing pre-eclampsia during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Dosage & Administration
- For Adults: 40000 IU once weekly for 7 weeks, maintenance therapy of 1400-2000 IU/day. Children (12-18 years): 20000 IU once every 2 weeks for 6 weeks. Various dosage forms including capsules, film-coated tablets, oroflash or chewable tablets, syrup, and injection.
Interaction
- Interacts with drugs such as Magnesium containing Antacids, Digoxin, Thiazide Diuretics, Cholestyramine, Cholistipol, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital, Orlistat, Mineral Oil, and Corticosteroids like Prednisolone.
Contraindications
- Not recommended for patients with diseases associated with hypercalcemia, hypersensitivity to vitamin D3, or evidence of vitamin D3 toxicity.
Side Effects
- Rare symptoms include anorexia, lassitude, nausea & vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, polyuria, sweating, headache, thirst, vertigo, and raised concentrations of calcium and phosphate in plasma and urine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safe use during pregnancy up to 4000 IU. Recommended daily intake for pregnant women is 400 IU, but higher doses may be required for those deficient. Excreted in breast milk. Overdose in breast-fed infants has not been observed.
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor plasma-calcium concentration in patients receiving high doses, in renal impairment, and during pregnancy & lactation. Consult a health care practitioner before supplementing with vitamin D3 if using Digoxin and Thiazide Diuretics, or if having liver or kidney disease, primary hyperthyroidism, lymphoma, tuberculosis, or granulomatous disease.
Use in Special Populations
- Safety & efficacy in children under 12 years have not been established.
Overdose Effects
- Can lead to hypervitaminosis D.
