Indications
- Symptomatic relief of Osteoarthritis (OA)
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Pain and signs of inflammation associated with acute gouty arthritis
- Short-term treatment of moderate pain associated with dental surgery
Pharmacology
- Potent, orally active cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) specific inhibitor
- Inhibition of COX-2 without significant inhibition of COX-1
- Decreased potential for GI toxicity and effects on platelet aggregation
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended doses for different conditions
- Caution on cardiovascular risks and duration of exposure
Interaction
- With oral anticoagulants, diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and Angiotensin II Antagonists
- Concomitant use with acetylsalicylic acid, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, and lithium
- Instructions to take without regards to meals
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
- Active peptic ulceration or Gl bleeding
- Various patient conditions including pregnancy, severe hepatic dysfunction, and renal impairment
Side Effects
- Palpitation, fatigue, influenza-like symptoms, ecchymosis
- Rare occurrences of dry mouth, taste disturbance, chest pain, anxiety, myalgia
- Very rare occurrences of confusion and hallucinations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in women attempting to conceive
- Excretion in milk of lactating rats, hence breastfeeding caution
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution with patients at risk of gastrointestinal complications, the elderly, and those with cardiovascular risk factors
- Monitoring of renal and liver function
- Caution with patients with a history of cardiac failure, left ventricular dysfunction, or hypertension
Overdose Effects
- No significant toxicity observed with high doses
- General supportive measures recommended in case of overdose
