Description
- Gliclazide is a second generation sulfonylurea drug
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic cells
Dosage
- Film-coated tablet
- Modified release preparation
- Usual initial dose 40 to 80 mg daily
- Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily in divided doses when needed
Administration
- Take the drug before meal
- Take tablet(s) with a glass of water at breakfast time
- Always eat a meal after taking tablet(s)
Interaction
- Low blood sugar may occur when meals are irregular or skipped
- Blood glucose disturbances can occur when taking fluoroquinolone antibiotics
- Glix MR may increase the effects of medicines that reduce blood clotting
Contraindications
- Allergic to gliclazide or sulfonylurea medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Taking medicines to treat fungal infections
Side Effects
- Most common side effect is low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
- Liver disorders
- Skin reactions such as rash, itching, hives
- Decrease in the number of cells in the blood
